Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Hi! I’m Abigail and I am, first and foremostly, a photographer. My eye has been behind the camera lens since my early teens, snapping images with an eye for creativity, lightness and shadow, spontaneity, details and vistas. My passion has always been to capture nuance and emotion in all my subjects. I believe my eye for detail is what creates joyous, intimate images my clients will forever cherish when sharing and looking back on their so special day. I’d like to give you some tips on how to go about choosing the perfect photographer to memorialize your wedding celebration.

Before starting your search for a wedding photographer, it is important to take some time to look at wedding pictures, and lots of them. This will help you decide what to look for when choosing a wedding photographer. The web, of course, has an unlimited supply of images for you to browse.

Here are a few sites that I like:

Are you drawn to photographers whose style leans towards the romantic, with softened edges and colors? Maybe you like crisp, bold images, or ones that have a whimsical or fun quality to them. When you get a feel for the style that speaks to you, you’re ready to start your search. Look at the portfolios of potential photographers to make sure they can create the style and energy you are looking for.

Once you’ve narrowed down wedding photographers you are interested in contacting, it’s important to consider certain criteria before making the first call. Narrowing down exactly what you are looking for will help you and the photographer come up with the perfect package for you.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What is your budget?
  • What events do you want covered? (Bachlor(ette) party, rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony, reception, etc)
  • How many people will be in the wedding party? If it’s a large celebration the photographer may need to hire a second shooter?
  • Do you need the photographer to travel to the venue? An extra charge may be incurred if the photographer must travel more than 2 hours, or they may request accommodations for overnight stays.
  • Do you want a videographer, and if so, does the photographer have recommendations?
  • In addition to digital, would you like to have film images, and does the photographer offer that service?
  • What does the photographer provide as final product and what is the typical turnaround time?
  • How and when is payment expected?

Have fun exploring, and if you use these tips, I’m sure you will be successful in choosing the wedding photographer of your dreams who will create beautiful photos that will last a lifetime!
